Share your thoughts: STELLAR UNIT 4 (Ride on)

We had just gone through an expository text in class today and learnt from the text why the MRT is becoming the main mode of transportation instead of the bus, private cars, bicycles etc. The text did mention about a few limitations of the MRT system and also explained why the MRT system is favoured as compared to the other modes.

I am sure all of you have your own thoughts or stand about the MRT as the future of city transport. Please contribute your opinions in the "Comments" box below and respond to your friend's opinions.

Some questions to guide you:

1) Do you agree that the MRT is going to be the future of city transport? Why?

2) If not, what other modes of transportation are more efficient or practical? Why?

3) Some of you have travelled abroad before. How is the transportation system different from ours? How can we learn from them?

4) Share your experience travelling around in Singapore? Which mode of transportation does you prefer? Why?

  1. When I went to Taiwan a few years back, I was quite surprised to know that the mode of transportation there is different for different towns.
For e.g. in Taipei, a highly city very similar to Singapore, the people depend a lot on their MRT system. Their system is even more complex than ours.

In Hualien city which comprises mainly of rural and mountaineous areas, the people depend more on their private vehicles. The bus system is not very developed there.

I feel that an efficient transportation system is one that caters to the needs of the people living there. I wonder if the MRT is the mode of transportation that caters best to Singaporeans' needs? Should I ask instead, what exactly do we Singaporeans need?

  2. I agreed that the MRT is going to be future of city transport because when we travelled in convMRT, it does not cause pollution and it is more convenient. When I went to Taiwan during the March holidays, I travelled by MRT. I saw the people who are going to aboard the MRT were lining in two straight line and they do not rush in the MRT when the MRT has come. We can learnt form them on this kind of manners. I never travelled on MRT before in Singapore. I only travelled on buses and car in Singapore before. Between buses and cars, I prefer travelling on cars as sometimes, during peek hours, the buses are usually very crowded and it is not so fast as it needed to stop at every stations when we pass by.

I agree that the MRT is going to be our future of city transport because we can build bigger roads for cool flying vehicles and MRT is more convenient than other vehicles. MRT cause less pollution to the enviroment. But the disadvantage of the MRT is that the trains cost around $5 million dollars. So I think that MRT would be our future of city transport.

I agree that MRT is our future city transport because MRT cause lesser polution.although MRT cause less polution,i prefer taxi as it is convenient and MRT might breakdown any minute so i think taxi or buses is safer. The disadvantage of building the MRT train is that it cost $5 million dollar and it is very expensive.

  5. this is sean tan and I agree.singapore is a very small island. It can not have all of its population having a car.
To avoid this, singapore is using the certificate of entitlment, buses and most importantly, trains.I actualy pefer the bus because now there are eco friendly buses.

  6. Great responses!
    > To Sean: Do you have more information on eco-friendly buses? Are the public buses in Singapore eco-friendly?

    > To Xin Yi, Chun Heng & Fakhrurazi: It seems that you are convinced by the text that MRT is the future of our transportation.
I agree with Chun Heng that the taxi or bus is a "safer" mode of transportation if we are considering cases of breakdown. It is easier to divert traffic on the roads than for the MRT. If a MRT breaks down, that's it. The other trains cannot proceed until the problem is solved.

  9. Yes .I think that the MRT will be our future transportation as it is very convenient . If u walk from your house to the nearest MRT station it will only take like 10-15min and second reason like what Zi Lin said 'train is better as it would not cause pollution'. Which is helping to slower down Global Warming.

  11. I agree that MRT is going to be the future of city transport as MRT is now promoted to most of the city and it creates lesser amount of pollution then car and buses. But most people still prefer buses then MRT,and I prefer both!

  14. Yes, I think that MRT is going to be Singapore's future city transport as it is very convenient. You could get across the country within minuets and it does not pollute the air and also does not have traffic jams. But i hope the system does not broke down! But I have a question : WHY ISN'T THE MRT OPEN 24 HOURS? Because on weekdays it is open from 5am-11pm and on weekends its 5am to 12 midnight.. SO could some one answer my question please..?

    1. It will be something really good for commuters if the MRT operates for 24 hours. What do you think is happening every night when the MRT is not operating? What do you think is happening to the MRT during its "non-operating hours" at night?
      Any takers for this question?

  15. Yes i agree that MRT is going to be our future transportation because it has less pollution to air.But MRT has disadvantages during peak hours when the train will be full.I would prefer bus when MRT cant go into that place and MRT when i want to go to somewhere which is faster by MRT trains.

  17. Do you know that the North-South Line and the East-West Line is created in 1987 while the Circle Line is created in 2009 and the North-East Line is created in 2003? There will be a new line called " Downtown Line" that would be created in 2013, 2015 and 2017! How cool is that?

  20. yo yo yo, this is Marcus speaking.i agree that MRT is our future transport. the main reasons are
-it does not pollute our environment
    -it is more cheap
-we do not need to buy fuel which is expensive
-we do not need to wait for traffic lights because the is none on the rails
    -hrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm............

but it is breaking down so i think less people will use private cars if this problem is not fixed...

  21. It seems that most of you support MRT as the future mode of transportation because it is cheaper, more environment-friendly, congestion-free etc.

What about its problem of being inflexible? We cannot remove the track or station or change the route easily, unlike buses. Any ideas?

    1. Hmm.. That IS a major problem. But Miss Lee, Why would they want to remove the tracks?
