Share your thoughts: STELLAR UNIT 4 (Ride on)
We had just gone through an expository text in class today and learnt from the text why the MRT is becoming the main mode of transportation instead of the bus, private cars, bicycles etc. The text did mention about a few limitations of the MRT system and also explained why the MRT system is favoured as compared to the other modes.
I am sure all of you have your own thoughts or stand about the MRT as the future of city transport. Please contribute your opinions in the "Comments" box below and respond to your friend's opinions.
Some questions to guide you:
1) Do you agree that the MRT is going to be the future of city transport? Why?
2) If not, what other modes of transportation are more efficient or practical? Why?
3) Some of you have travelled abroad before. How is the transportation system different from ours? How can we learn from them?
4) Share your experience travelling around in Singapore? Which mode of transportation does you prefer? Why?
P.S. Remember to identify yourself when you are commenting and don't forget about your net etiquette.

Term 1 Composition - By Yan Ning
“Mummy, can we go for a ride at the nearby park?” Rui Shan and Yan Ting asked politely. “Ok, but you must be careful while cycling.” Their mother said. They promised their mother and went out with their brand new bicycles. When they reached the park, there were sounds of nature - Birds chirping and frogs croaking. There were also some people having picnics, some people flying kites and some people jogging. Rui Shan and Yan Ting then started cycling leisurely and cruised along the path. They were so engrossed in talking while cycling that they did not notice they were cycling at breakneck speed.
Suddenly, Yan Ting saw there was twig in front of her. She quickly swerved to the right to avoid the twig. Just at the same time, a ball had rolled to the middle of the cyclist path. A little boy was trying to retrieve it. Yan Ting did not notice the boy was just three meters ahead. A jogger jogged past and saw that the boy’s life was in danger and tried to stop the girls but it was too late. Yan Ting’s bicycle knocked into the little boy and Yan Ting flew into mid air. She sprained her ankle and her face was contorted with pain. Her bicycle was wrecked beyond recognition. She was feeble and could not stand up. Soon, some curious onlookers formed a crowd and saw what had happened. Rui Shan quickly called the ambulance.
A few minutes later, wails of ambulance sirens reverberated in the air. The paramedics attended to Yan Ting and sent her to the nearby hospital. After hearing about the news, Yan Ting’s mother quickly rushed to the hospital. The doctor was examining Yan Ting and told her mother that Yan Ting would be discharged in two days’ time. Her mother was relieved and was happy to hear that Yan Ting was all right. After this painful lesson, Yan Ting learnt to be more careful.

It was a bright and sunny morning. It was the start of the school holiday. Marry was very bored as she had nothing to do for the school holiday. As it was a bright and sunny, she decided to ride a bicycle in the park. She phoned Lisa to ask her whether she could ride with her. Lisa agreed without any hesitation.
When they reached the park, they could fell the breezy wind caressing their faces. Children laughter travelled through the air. Kites were soaring high in the air. Families were lounging leisurely under the natural awning of the trees. They were having a fantastic time with their picnic.
Mary and Lisa were intensely engaged in their conversation as they sped along the path on their bicycles. As they were laughing with glee, Lisa did not notice a twig obstructing her way. The wheels of her bicycle ran over the twig, causing Lisa to lose her balance. To her surprise, she knocked into a little boy who came out of nowhere to retrieve his ball. Lisa was flung out of her bicycle. Lisa’s bicycle swerved to the left and hit Mary who was still on her bicycle. A muscular man tried to stop the accident from happening but to no avail. Soon many passersby crowded around the accident scene. Lisa lay sprawled on the ground bleeding profusely. She was moaning in pain. Mary sustained superficial injury. The muscular man immediately whipped out his mobile phone and dialed for the ambulance.
Within minutes, wails of sirens could be heard. The paramedics sprang in to action without further delay. They put Lisa, Mary and the little boy on the stretcher. They rushed them to the hospital for treatment. The nurse informed Lisa’s parents about the accident. The whole family descended on the hospital like a plague of locusts, demanding to see Lisa immediately. They were worried about Lisa’s condition.
After a few hours of observation, the doctor told Lisa’s parents that she had suffered a concussion. Upon hearing the bad news, tears started to roll down their cheeks. They regretted letting Lisa go cycling with her friends. They apologized to Mary and the little boy’s parents. Fortunately, Mary and the little boy had minor injuries and were discharged on that day. Lisa’s parents prayed that Lisa would regain consciousness soon.
After a month, Lisa’s parents received a call from the hospital, informing them that Lisa had regained consciousness. Her parents heaved a sigh of relief.

Public accident
“Mummy, can we go to the park to cycle with our brand new bicycles?”Jane asked with her elder sister, Jean. “Yes, but you must be careful,” said their mother. After that, Jane and Jean cycled to the park with their brand new bicycles. When they reached the park, they saw some people having picnic, some flying kites while some were playing ball. Then, Jean had an idea in her mind. She asked Jane, “Do you want to have a bicycle race?” “Yes, I will surely win,” replied Jane with confidence.
After that, they started the race. They cycled at breakneck speed. A passerby who went by saw a twig infront of Jean’s bicycle. He gestured with his hands to tell Jean that there is a twig laying on the path infront of her. Unfortunately, Jane and Jean were still talking and laughing to each other and did not notice the obstacle ahead.
As Jean was cycling, she saw a twig infront of her bicycle. That was when she just noticed the man was gesturing at her. Her bicycle was approaching the twig. She wanted to prevent the bicycle from spoiling, so she swerved her bicycle to the left. She lost her balance. As a result, she fell onto the ground. She fractured her arm and blood was flowing profusely out of her knees.
Jane was too shocked by what had happened to Jean and did not notice the boy infront of her was picking a ball which had rolled onto the path. Unable to break in time, Jane knocked into the boy. ‘Boom!’ Jane and the boy flew ten metres away from where they were. Jane’s bicycle was spoilt and she had bruises and grazes all over the body. She had also sprained her ankle. The boy fell on his head and became unconscious instantly.
One of the passersby called an ambulance. Within five minutes, the sirens of an ambulance were heard. The paramedics carried Jane and Jean into the ambulance and checked on the boy. One of the paramedics announced that the boy was dead. Everyone was sad and shocked to see what had happened. The boy’s parents were informed about what had happened.
The next day, Jean and Jane were allowed to leave the hospital. They went home with their parents. When they were in their parent’s car, they felt guilty about causing the death of the boy. They promised their parents that they will be alert at all times.
